About Us

h-medicalCare.jpgHill Country Medical Associates (HCMA) is the largest provider of family medicine services in Comal County. Our nine board-certified physicians, two nurse practitioners and three physician assistants combine for over 150 years of medical practice knowledge and experience in providing comprehensive family-focused care to our patients. We offer a full range of family practice services for all ages. Our mission is working together to provide high quality, compassionate health care to meet the needs of our patients and the community.

Our History

On April 1, 1995, three solo practice physicians (Dr. Warren Albrecht, Dr. Dorothy Overman and Dr. William Reeves) and a small group practice, New Braunfels Family Practice Associates (Dr. Gary Bird, Dr. Ronald Cohle and Dr. Randal Jacks), came together to form Hill Country Medical Associates. For the next several years we practiced from our existing offices until the opening of our current location at 774 Landa Street in January 1998. Just nine months after moving into the current 14,700 sq. ft. facility, the building was a casualty of the flood of October 1998 when over 20" of rain fell in and around the New Braunfels area. Just three months later, in January 1999, we moved back into our building and have been high and dry ever since.

In 2001, Dr. Michael Hindman joined the group and two years later, in 2003, Dr. Jason Nelson joined the HCMA team, both coming to us through the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Brian Stigall, a well-respected physician in our community, joined the practice in August 2008. Dr. Bird retired from HCMA in 2008. In July 2012, Dr. John Lee joined the group, moving from Port Lavaca where he had been practicing for the past 13 years and in August 2012; Dr. Kyle Fehlis joined us from the Texas A&M Family Medicine Residency Program. We are also blessed with an excellent group of nurse practitioners (Mesha Box, Wendi Konomos and Sharon Wright) and physician assistants (Jayme Baker and Darrell Svatek).

Our physicians are active in the community, serving as medical directors, committee chairpersons, and being involved in the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic. They also participate in other community activities, such as serving on Wurstfest committees, participating in local theater productions, and serving in local churches.
